Symptoms of depression might include thoughts like these:
- “I have to admit I’m depressed and I really am fed up with it”;
- “I try to squish myself against the wall at work so nobody will notice me”;
- “I walked along the street and just burst into tears at the sight of a snail: a snail – I have no idea why!”;
- “I really want to care for my family so much but I’m just so tired, I can’t”;
- “I just want to get a bit of balance, my emotions are all over the place!”.
Low self esteem is often related to unhappy or depressive feelings:
- “I just fall in love with the wrong people, over and over again”;
- “I was sure this was the right thing to do, went into it with high hopes and I just can’t take the failure”;
- “I just keep eating them, they’re so delicious I have to have another, and another”.
Throughout our lives, different things make us all anxious and stressed. This is normal.
Sometimes our anxiety results in nervous habits, twitches, phobias, twiddling, checking, controlling, panic attacks, or ‘over thinking’ things.
Even in maths there’s the notion of cause & effect. There, it’s the poetic “butterfly effect” … the tiny flapping of a butterfly’s wings might create a chain of tiny events that may alter the path, delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado somewhere. The same is true in psychology; some small change or event, probably during childhood, can have a profound effect later in life.
As your mind tries desperately to ignore anything to do with that change or event, it creates more and more elaborate ways to distract you from it: depression, shyness and blushing, making you overly trusting or gullible, guilt, over sensitivity, all or nothing reactions, melancholia, compulsive behaviour, the list goes on.
Unlike the tornado which can’t be stopped, even years down the line, we can stop that change or event affecting the rest of your life. We can erase the cause of the behaviour so you can be you on a good day, EVERY day.
